Fall 2013 Additions

2013 has been a bit of a dud year in NL BlogRoll land. There weren't any awards handed out and there were no Blog of the Week additions - both of which we hope to resuscitate in 2014. What we have been able to do this year however, is keep on top of new additions to our beloved community. The list of blogs is the most important part afterall. So, stay tuned for more updates on 2014, and in the mean time check out the fall additions below. Be sure to say hello!

Spring 2013 Additions

Spring has arrived in Newfoundland and Labrador, and how wonderful it is to have the winter done with - though I probably shouldn't jinx it by saying that too loudly. With a new season here, I figured it was time to do some cleaning around these parts while I had a couple hours to do so. I spent time rearranging where some of the blogs were listed in the rolls on this page today, but that isn't the main reason for this post. The most important thing I did today was add 17 news blogs to the network, and that makes me smile. I'm always a happy camper when I get to add new blogs. I have to say that it never ceases to amaze me to find out that there are more out there. I keep on thinking I will come to the end of the NL blogs, but it never happens... and it hope it never does. But, that's enough babbling out of me for now. I thin it's time for ya'll go check out the newbies, and be sure to say hello!

No Awards, Yes Newbies

More on this in the NL Blogger's Choice Awards section, but just to let the community know (and visitors) I have decided to cancel the 2012 Blogger's Choice Awards as I personally do not have the time to dedicate to the session right now. Without the nominations flowing in as I hoped they would, the job of getting everything ready is considerably more difficult. I've decided to focus on what I can take care of around these parts over the year, and then get back to this whole award thing at the end of 2013.

PLEASE NOTE that nominations will remain open all year, however. You can leave you choices in any of the applicable threads or email them to nlblogroll @ gmail.com.

NEWBIES ADDED

Now for some good news! I've added a bunch of new blogs to the Blogroll, all of which are listed below. These have all been added to the  main rolls on the right side bar, thier category rolls on the left side bar and on each page of the Category Sections. Be sure to check them out!

Updates and New Additions

Before listing all the new additions that were added to the site this evening, I wanted to remind any readers that the 2012 NL Blogger's Choice Awards will be coming soon. Having said that, it is likely that things will be postponed slightly, mostly due to the lack of nominations that have come in thus far. No, I'm not going to blame it on totally on the community, as the lack of available time to promote the nomination phase hasn't been good for getting things rolling. The past month has flown by for me and I don't really see things slowing down in the coming days or weeks. With that said though, Nominations will remain open for as long as needed. Please head on over to the Blogger's Choice Awards Section for more information and to nominate your favourite NL Blogs today.

December Newbies

Before you head out (or just after your done nominating), be sure to check out the newest additions to the blogroll as well, which are listed below and added to all the applicable sidebar rolls found throughout the site. Enjoy!

The 2012 Awards Session

The 2012 NL Blogger's Choice Awards are rapidly approaching, and this year's awards session will start a little differently than last. This year we're going to begin with a nomination period whereby people who visit the BlogRoll (be they friends, family or strangers) get to choose who will be put up for vote. The final choices for each category will then be carefully selected based on many elements; design, content, frequency of posting, etc. That part is much like last year.

Nominating a blog is pretty simple stuff. All anyone has to do is GO TO THIS PAGE HERE and post a reply with the URL you wish to nominate (or feel free to send a email to nlblogroll @ gmail.com). It's as easy as that.

As posted on that link, there are three rules for submissions:

1) The nomination must be a current member of the NL BlogRoll, in either of the categories.

2) We are asking that you do NOT nominate your own blog, as that sort of defeats the purpose of nominations. We strongly encourage you to convince someone else to nominate you, but just not doing so yourselves.

3) No Anonymous Nominations will be accepted, but if you'd rather not log in to submit your choice, then please email us at nlblogroll @ gmail.com.

We'll be running this nomination period for approximately one month, bringing us to mid December with the actual awards session coming in January 2013.

Now, head on over to the hub page for the NL Blogger's Choice Awards and get nominating!

A Few Fall Additions

Below are more lovely additions to the site, and these few will likely be the last new ones for the year. With only 2 months left to 2012 (as hard as that is to believe), I can't see many more requests to join coming in. Besides, I'll be focusing on the NL Blogger's Choice Awards which will be coming soon and, as of this update, everyone who is currently listed will have a chance to be a part of it... but I won't talk about that any more yet. For now, focus on the newbies below and go check them out! I'll get the the 2012 awards session soon enough...

Blog of the Week : 08/19 - 08/25 2012

The Blog of the Week for August 19th to the 25th, 2012 is 'I code by the sea'; a blog from the mind of Jamie Goodyear, who is a software developer in St. John's. Jamie shares his experiences as an open source developer living in the province via this blog, which I have to mention, has a lovely simple title I really like... Especially when you pair it with a 2nd blog of his entitled 'I also make Cookies'.

It's not often that I feature two blogs in one blog of the week but, with this tandem of blogs, I had to make an exception. Jamie has two great, yet vastly different blogs here, which he does tie nicely together with the thought, "Recipes are just another kind of coding.". Makes sense to me. These are both great additions to the community here folks, so please check them out!

Summer Blog Additions

Those who have been enjoying the Blog of the Week selections over the past couple of months may have noticed that none were selected this past Sunday. The reason being is that I decided to focus attentions this week to new blog additions. With so many email requests having built up, this is in fact long overdue. In a blog community as large as this one currently is, it's hard to imagine there are more blogs out there that haven't been listed yet... but there are. The 42 new additions in this update prove that, and this after a year of already heavy adding. I'm quite impressed.

As always, the blogs have been listed in all the applicable rolls on this main hub (the New Additions roll and their applicable mini roll) and also listed on the main roll of their applicable individual category page.

So I now leave it to you, the visitor, to continue doing just that; go visiting further. The newbies are listed below!

Blog of the Week : 08/05 - 08/11 2012

The Blog of the Week for August 5th to the 11th, 2012 is 'Twig'; a blog brought to us by the English Language Research Centre at Memorial University, which discusses the English language in our great province. Inspired by the Dictionary of Newfoundland and Labrador, blog creator Jenny Higgins sets out to explore the vocabulary of NL and examine the research that went into the creation of the internationally acclaimed dictionary; one the most well known publications to come out of the province. The blog appears to have it's own community of people contributing to it's success, and it's certainly an incredible addition to the broader blog community here, so please take some time to check it out. It will surely not disappoint!

Blog of the Week : 07/29 - 08/04 2012

The Blog of the Week for July 29th to August 4th, 2012 is 'BriscoPhoto'. For some, photography and blogging go hand in hand, and I have to agree that it is a perfect way to get your photos out there for the world to see and comment on. This particular blog has been created to showcase the street photography of Brian Scott, who sets out to document  life in St. John's (among other places) using his keen eye. With many other local photographers focusing on the rugged beauty of the landscapes in this wonderful province, Brian provides something equally beautiful, but perhaps a bit more unique. In the case of photography and photo blogs however, seeing is believing, so head on over to check things out!

Blog of the Week : 07/22 - 07/28 2012

The Blog of the Week for July 22nd to the 28th, 2012 is 'Corner Brook Running Club'. With the Tely 10 having taken place today, I figured it would be pertinent to focus on a related blog this week. Running and Jogging seems to have taken off in this province over the past few years, and it apparently isn't localized to the capitol city only, evident with this weeks featured selection. The CB Running Club blog's main purpose is to post any recent information on the club, which itself exists to 'promote running for fun, fitness and competition in the city and surrounding area'. It certainly does a great job with that! With lots of information found inside, frequent postings and a great network for any related resources, this site is another great addition to the blogging fitness fanatics in the province. Check it out!

Blog of the Week : 07/15 - 07/21 2012

The Blog of the Week for July 15th to the 21st, 2012 is 'Nain Bay'. There are very few blogs listed within our community here that come from, or focus on, any aspect of the 'Big Land'. When coming across this week's selection while browsing over the past few days, I knew it had to be featured for that very reason. Labrador does not receive much focus in discussions of our province after all, especially the far north regions of the vast land. The blogger of this space provides great insight into living in such a place, and what's most interesting to me is that he also provides an outside perspective into Nain Bay, as he is originally from Australia. There is a large variety of posts contained within this wonderful web log; discussions ranging from political rants to random lifestyle items. It's definitely one which should be visited whenever the chance is available. How about now? Head on over!

Sunday, July 08, 2012

Blog of the Week : 07/08 - 07/14 2012

The Blog of the Week for July 8th to the 14th, 2012 is 'Root Cellars Rock!'. This blog is the online presence for an extremely valuable provincial project hosted by the Food Security Network of Newfoundland Labrador. The blog itself is a space for the sharing of local food knowledge and for helping provide access to learning resources. There is certainly a large amount of information contained within, which could keep any interested party informed and entertained for days. It also provides individuals with the ability to discuss their own idea's and resources, as if there's one thing that this blog does, it is facilitate discussion. Bravo to the The Root Cellars Rock! Advisory Committee and their passion for the local food system. Without them, we would probably not have such a wonderful addition to the blogosphere, which of course you should be off visiting now. Click the pic and away you go!

Sunday, July 01, 2012

Blog of the Week : 07/01 - 07/07 2012

The Blog of the Week for July 1st to the 7th, 2012 is 'Zombies Wearing Helmets'. It has to be admitted that at least half the reason why this blog was selected this week was due to the title, which blogger Leah says is because she "adores those naughty little munchers so gosh darn much". Don't get the wrong idea though; this blog doesn't solely revolve around Zombies. It actually doesn't surrender itself to any single meme and stands as a true Mixed Bag of a blog. It does tend to lean towards craft and entertainment items, however, which the author writes enthusiastically about frequently. This space is a lovely little addition to our community here and one well worth checking out. Get on that now, won't ya!

Sunday, June 24, 2012

Blog of the Week : 06/24 - 06/30 2012

The Blog of the Week for June 24th to the 30th, 2012 is 'Just a Foodie'; a lovely blog all about the delicious food found in this great province. The author of the site doesn't claim to be a master chef, but does insist that their experience making food for their family for over 20 years gives them the ability and expeirence to critique (which I totally agree with). The blog is "dedicated to the places that showcase good, unpretentiousness, comfort or soul food" and features detailed write ups of local restaurants and foodie loving events. It's a wonderful space, one to help you discover delightful places to check out if in the mood for dining. So, what are you waiting for? Head on over and get your taste buds working!

Sunday, June 17, 2012

Blog of the Week : 06/17 - 06/23 2012

The Blog of the Week for June 17th to the 23rd, 2012 is 'NL Stuff'. This mixed bag of a blog is chalked full of a vast variety of delightful articles, all focusing on, well, NL Stuff. The newspaper format design of the site gives the reader an overview of the assortment of posts present, which in turn gives those readers easy access to any story they wish to peruse. The shear number of different stories revolving around community events, politics, entertainment and anything in between makes this a place that visitors can often visit to find new and interesting Newfoundland and Labrador related items. Why not start your frequent visiting today. Head on over and check it out!

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Blog of the Week : 06/10 - 06/16 2012

The Blog of the Week for June 10th to the 16th, 2012 is 'Million Dollar Journey'. Investing, economics and all things related are hot topics throughout the entirety of the world these days, and with that being the case, selecting a blog for this week which focuses on such things just made sense. The site is jam packed with articles to help educate the masses on personal finance and investing, and sprinkled throughout are articles of personal investment strategies from the authors. It's a highly informative blog on a topic that many people are increasingly becoming more interested in, now that the daily news cycle is heavily focusing on the economies of the world. If you're looking for a great investment, I suggest it be some of your time into this blog. Check it out!

Sunday, June 03, 2012

Blog of the Week : 06/03 - 06/09 2012

The Blog of the Week for June 3rd to the 9th, 2012 is 'Candice Does The World'; a personal journal style of blog with a specific focus on travel. It's hard to ignore the dazzling header as you enter this wonderful blog, but when you get past that, you are treated with delightful article after article from the perspective of a "20-something female dangling precariously on the edge of eastern Canada". The entries mostly relate to Cadince's travels and even include reviews of hotels and such. It's another great example of the wonderful talent found within this blogroll, and is a blog well worth checking out. Right now would be a good time for you to do that, so click the pic and off you go!

Sunday, May 27, 2012

Blog of the Week : 05/27 - 06/02 2012

The Blog of the Week for May 27th to June 2nd, 2012 is 'Occupy Newfoundland and Labrador'. Not only has this blog been selected as a way to show solidarity for the cause, but also because this is one heck of a blog. It's highly informative, frequently updated and a tremendous online community for this local chapter of a worldwide cause. Occupy NL made national headlines recently for being one of (if not, the) last camp to be evicted after lasting a long cold winter. Have no fear though, the movement is not dead, as this blog will clearly show. With general information on the movement, workshops, resources, media and a bevy of other items found within, this is one place you could spend a lot of time, and perhaps learn how you could help while you're there. So head on over and check it out!

Sunday, May 20, 2012

Blog of the Week : 05/20 - 05/26 2012

The Blog of the Week for May 20th to the 26th, 2012 is 'CornerBrooker'; a wonderful site from the west coast of Newfoundland. This blog has evolved into more of a community itself, as it serves as a one stop shop for all things revolving around Corner Brook. This tightly designed space is highly informative with event, weather and transit information in the area, just to name a few items found within this wealth of information. The site isn't only a hit for locals either, as the site was chosen as the 'Best Overall Blog' in the 2011 Canadian Blog Awards (as displayed proudly in the header). With that said, it's time to get visiting. Click the pic and away you go!

Sunday, May 13, 2012

Blog of the Week : 05/13 - 05/19 2012

The Blog of the Week for May 13th to the 19th, 2012 is 'St. John's Mom' and I guess it's only fitting that I would choose a Mom's blog for the selection today, this being Mother's Day and all. Well it wasn't as simple as just selecting a 'Mom's Blog' because there are several of them listed on the BlogRoll and all are equally lovely. What jumped out at me with this particular one was the wealth of information contained within. It's jam packed with articles targeted towards families and all are tightly knit within an eye appealing design, headlined by a beautiful shot of St. John's. Any Mother (or Father for that matter) would certainly enjoy this blog, so get going and check it out!

Blog of the Week Returns Sunday

As declared in my previous post, the Blog of the Week initiative will return in just 2 days. I have to say, I'm quite excited to finally be returning to this. It's an aspect of the site that I was always fond of doing each week, as it was one that helped expose me personally to a lot of great blogs. I'm glad that I finally have things reorganized around here so that I can get back at visiting and selecting, especially considering all the incredible blogs I noticed while visiting during that reorganization. I'm definitely going to have difficult times choosing the weekly selections... or maybe the wealth of awesomeness out there will make it easy. There's an argument there I'm sure...

For those not in the know, each Sunday a new blog (from the nearly 400 that we have listed here) will be chosen and promoted for the duration of the week. The sidebar will feature the blog along with a feed of their most recent offerings, not to mention a post here which gives vistitors the gist of what the selected blog is all about.  You can read much more about it here and really, seeing is understanding anyway, so be sure to check back on Sunday to see this weeks selection!

What's on the Horizon

Now that the large task of updating the lists have been taken care of, time is now available for some other clean-up items and initiatives. Here's an outlook on what's on the horizon for the NL BlogRoll.

Blog of the Week Returns

After a very long run of consecutive blog's selected weekly last year, a long hiatus from the Blog of the Week initiative persisted. It began with needing the time to focus on the Blogger's Choice Awards, but later it became more about timing. Well now the timing for a return is just about right, and a return we will!

Beginning  next Sunday (May 13th), I'm going feature one of the many wonderful blog's out there each week. I could do a blog of day if I had more time, there's that many great blogs here. I'm going to stick with the weekly features for the time being of course, but you get my drift; there's a lot of great blogs.

Be sure to check next Sunday for the return of the NL Blog of the Week!

New Category Coming

After visiting all these sites again over the past couple of months, I've come to realize that there is an abundance of family and health related blogs contained within the lists. Many of them are found within the Personal / Journal section, but not all of them as they are indeed scattered about. I've decided that, where there are so many, I'm going to create a new category for them. I'm essentially planning to remove the Personal / Journal category and recategorize the related blogs to the new Health and Family one. Any that do not fit will be placed in whatever other related section best fits their site. The Personal / Journal category was far too vague anyhow, so this really works out in favor of the site overall I believe. Stay tuned for that shift in the near future.

Blogger's Choice Awards Updates and Discussion

Now that it's been a couple of months since last years winners have been announced, I figure it's soon time for me to discuss how the awards will be evolving. While I do have some clear plans in mind to, at the very least,  add a nomination period to next years session, I'm also planning to open the floor for discussion to see if what the community would like to see. This discussion will come in the coming weeks, so please stay tuned for that if you have any thoughts on it at all.

... and Stuff

The site is constantly evolving, so who knows what else is in store for these parts. What I do know is that there are still more Blogger's out there. I've already found about 20 new ones that I could add to the roll... and add them I will as soon as possible. The list will be at 400 strong before we know it. Wowza!

Numerous Newbies

As I briefly mentioned in the previous post, there has been a number of new additions to the BlogRoll recently. This has been a tremendously long time coming, which is perhaps why there are so many new additions this time around. In the several months since the last update, over 60 new blogs have been located and now listed. Most of these new additions are requests to be added (and I do so apologize for your wait!) but some are just random ones I've found in my travels. All are welcome additions of course. Each have been added to the applicable rolls found on this page and to the seperate category pages as well.

With that announced, I'm not going to waste any more time gabbing - It's visiting time! Check these folks out and be sure to say hello while you're there!

Surprise Spring Cleaning

What started as an attempt to add newly collected blog's, ended up being a full blown spring cleaning session. This was not something that I had in mind to do, but unfortunate circumstances forced the extra work upon me. In the end though, I think what resulted from the unfortunate times was a revitalized hub, making the work all the worthwhile.

It all began when I went to add newbies to the main list and the system wouldn't let me. I tried many things to rectify the situation up to and including a restart from scratch of a whole new list. It wasn't until I added about 180 blog's to that new list, that I realized the issue was the number of blog's being added. Apparently, the system now doesn't like lists that large (and we do have a large list). So with that, I got back to the drawing board on some new design and organizational ideas. What I've come up with is what you now see on the main hub. I've essentially split the list up into many different rolls, 3 of which are dedicated to frequency of posting; the most frequent updater's, the semi frequent updater's, and a list for the the not-been-updated-in-a-while folk. There is also a 4th list which is dedicated to the newest of the new to be added here. These few lists will be in constant flux I figure, as I move things around accordingly. You can check all those out in the right sidebar and while you're at it, check out the category lists which I've moved to the left hand side of the page.

I should also note that I've trimmed the list slightly as well. There were a small number of blog's which would not load anymore or were indicated as deleted. Those are no longer here, but we still have a total of 375 and that is absolutely awesome. That number does include a big bunch of newbies as well and I'll be posting more about that soon...

In the meantime, have a look around!

New Political / Commentary Winner

After spending a good portion of my afternoon yesterday finally getting the category pages redesigned and promoting each of the winners in the 2011 Blogger's Choice awards, I came to realize that the blog for the crowned champion of the Political / Commentary section was no longer loading. After contacting the owner, I was told that due to her now being employed by Liberal Party of Newfoundland Labrador, that she was ordered ('as standard practice': read more here on Geoff Meeker's blog) to delete her blog entirely. I'm honestly shocked over this and deeply saddened. Not only did we lose a dedicated blogger from our wonderful community here, but all her thoughts and words were also willingly completely purged from the internet. Why would anyone agree to do that? Furthermore, what exactly did the Liberal Party not want anyone to read now that she is employed with them? Morso, why in the heck would it be 'standard practice' for any open honest political party to do this? It looks incredibly terrible in my opinion, not only for the person who agreed to delete her personal thoughts, but mostly to the party who demanded it happen.

Regardless, I'm trying not to speak too politically within this space as I am more saddened about losing this voice from our community over the disturbing politics involved. What I'm mainly here to do today is to announce a new winner in the Politics / Commentary category for the 2011 Blogger's choice Awards. There is no point in promoting a deleted blog after all. What's sad is that I'm not sure how special the runner up is going to feel, now that they are being rewarded due to these circumstances. As much as I can assure the new winner (and any visitor reading this) that the battle in this category was a very close one, there's something a little defeating I would assume about being awarded under this situation. None the less, it is something I feel that should be done, and I hope the new winner feels as special as they should feel in the meantime.

So without further ado, please take the time to visit and congratulate the new winner in the Political / Commentary section... The Rural Lens. All related sections around the site have been updated accordingly. Congrats to the winner! Now get visiting...

Winners to be Announced TOMORROW!

The extremely long wait is nearly over my friends. The 10 winners of the 2011 NL Blogger's Choice Awards will be announced tomorrow and we'll be starting the day out in fine fashion. Not only will I be posting all about it here on this site (and all around the social media network this site exists within) but, I've also been invited on CBC Radio as well! That's right folks, tomorrow morning I'll be LIVE on the air for the St. John's Morning Show at around 8:20am where I'll be discussing the site and the winners prior to posting all about it online.

Be sure to tune to CBC radio in the morning to listen to the interview and then check here later in the day for a full announcement on the winners. Just a few short hours to go!

2012 Begins

First of all, welcome to 2012 everyone and I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday season to end 2011. The year was certainly a quick and busy one for me on this end, but a mostly joyous one none the less. I'm certainly excited for what the new year will bring, and I wish you all the happiness and success in this 12th year of the new millennium.

Secondly, and most importantly, you should know that this place is not dead. The last quarter of the year was indeed a lost one around these parts, but things are far from dead. I do realize that I left at an intense time without notice, but there was method to the madness (mixed with some uncontrollable events). In the end, waiting for the new year to kick back into gear was what was needed for me personally, and for the site in general.

Lastly, to begin the year, the first order of business will be the long awaited announcement of the 2011 Blogger's Choice Awards. Anxiety has surely come and gone for the nominees since October. Frustration has likely set in, anger perhaps, in anticipation for this announcement on these winners, but the wait is now over; All 10 winners will be announced this week! I promise.

With this announcement coming in January, what I've essentially done is made this initiative an end of year one and I will have more details on how this will progress in future years, plus I will be opening the floor for suggestions and comments on how it can be improved from your perspectives. First though, let me get those winners posted as you've all waited long enough. Please stay tuned throughout the week! It's a-comin'...
