Blog of the Week : 10/18 - 10/24 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' is back and for the week of Oct 18th to Oct 24th 2009, the blog of choice is 'Charlies Hash'.  This blog from, well Charlie, is described as having 'Some thoughts on current events from the eastern tip of North America' and it's evident that there plenty of thought throughout on a variety of topics.  It also boasts as having photos and graphics of a Newfoundland Nature and just scrolling down through, you can see them posted in nearly every article.  Charlie gives us a great blog here and it's well worth the selection this week.  Go check it out!

Blog of the Week : 10/04 - 10/10 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for the week of Oct 4th to Oct 10th 2009 is 'Doug Jones Photography', which is a photo blog from Doug; an amateur photographer based in St. John's, Newfoundland.  Besides the beautiful pictures found throughout, the most intriguing thing to me about this site is that there is a new photo posted daily and it's been happening since New Years Eve 2008.   The photos are all archived by month and all very lovely meaning this site is well worth the visit.

What are you waiting for?  Scoot!

Blog of the Week : 09/27 - 10/03 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for the week of Sept 27th to Oct 3rd 2009 is 'Rock Recipes', which is perhaps the only blog listed which will actually make your mouth water upon visiting.  This space from Barry C. Parsons  out of St. John's, who says he is a 'lifelong good obsessive', feature recipes (with pictures, mm, mmm) of traditional Newfoundland foods plus some of  his own creations mixed throughout.

So, unless you're on some radical diet, I suggest you take a peek at what this blog offers! Go on, click the pic.

Blog of the Week : 09/20 - 09/26 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for the week of Sept 20th to Sept 26th 2009 is 'I Found my Childhood on eBay'. This blog is one of the most unique on the roll with it's topic being things found on Ebay that, though remain unbought, serve as a reminder of the bloggers' childhood. It's fun to browse through the articles and pictures to see if there's anything familiar to your own lives, so why don't you hop on over and check it out.

Blog of the Week : 09/13 - 09/19 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for the week of Sept 13th to Sept 19th 2009 is 'Illustrated Life'; a blog from practicing artist and Newfoundland resident Jeanette Jobson. The blog features a collection of posts which display her beautiful artwork and Jeanatte states in her about me section that here "first love is dry media, but oils and watercolours find their way into my hands as well".  There is some very lovely art found here and for that, this blog is well worth a visit.

Blog of the Week : 09/06 - 09/12 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for the week of Sept 6th to Sept 12th 2009 is 'Kayaking Dreaming'; a blog from Stan Mac Kenzie out of St. John's, Newfoundland.  Stan states in his profile that 'Kayaking is my soul' and this blog is surely evident of that. His personal space features posts about his passion for kayaking and also for photography which for him come hand and hand with his main passion.  It's a lovely little blog and well worth the visit!

Not Necessarily the Weakest Link...

 ...but Good Bye

It's been a very long time since I've done this, but it's a necessary job if one wants to keep a list of links fairly clean.  The below list of links are members of the roll who haven't updated their blog in several months, in this case at all in the year 2009.  It also has some dead links listed.

As always, if you own any of these blogs and wish to become part of the roll again, just contact me and I'll add it back right away.  No problem.   In fact, I hope you do bring them back.

So, here goes:

Blog of the Week : 08/30 - 09/05 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for the week of Aug 30th to Sept 5th 2009 is 'Gas and Oil'. This is a slick blog from Greg Murphy out of St. John's and is one that you shouldn't let slip on by. With a non-crude simplistic blog design, George discusses gas and oil issues in our great province and with 8 years of research into petroleum, the discussions are informative.

BlogRoll Alive With 165

You know, there was a time that this roll had at least 201 blogs listed. I wonder how many of the ones we lost are actively posting again. I may have to check that out over the winter...

In the meantime, be sure to tell friends and family that we exist here. While you do that, I'll introduce you to 3 new members... bringing us to 165 blogs (I guess again).

Blog of the Week : 08/23 - 08/29 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for the week of Aug 23rd to Aug 29th 2009 is 'NL Running'; a blog with a title that speaks for itself. With the Tele 10 only a few weeks gone by, I figured this was a great blog to feature this time around (though yes, it probably would have a better choice for the actual weekend of the big race) so that I could help highlight the running culture in the province. From what I hear, it's a pretty popular past time (or life time) for many in the province and today's featured blog helps connect those who are part of the craze or want to be, while being able to inform the non running community of their happeneings.

Blog of the Week : 08/16 - 08/22 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for the week of Aug 16th to Aug 22nd 2009 is 'Missing the Rock'. This space from Nadine has a common theme to it for many people from our great province; missing home while being away. The blog itself features a variety of commentaries and thoughts on all things Newfoundland from an outside view with a sparkle of many other topics throughout. It's a lovely little blog and a great place to visit. ...

So go on. Click the pic!

Blog of the Week : 08/09 - 08/15 2009

I cut it close, but I didn't miss the 'Blog of the Week' for the week of Aug 9th to Aug 15th 2009. The selection this time around is 'Lloyds Newfoundland Photos'. This is another wonderful photo blog, this time from the talented Lloyd C. Rees who shares his beautiful collection with us on a frequent basis. If you're into Newfoundland and Labrador scenery (and who isn't?!) then I highly suggest to take a peek at Lloyds space here.

So Sorry

Well, it appears that this Blog of the Week initiative is during into a bi-weekly thing. It's not intentional, believe me. As explained earlier, the summer seems to be making it tough to get this done on a Sunday. This particular weekend, I was away visiting family. Perhaps it's time to pick a different day of the week to get 'er done. Then again, I know that when fall and winter come, Sunday will be the opportune day once again.

My best advice is to bare with me!

Blog of the Week : 07/26 - 08/01 2009

After a 2 week hiatus, the 'Blog of the Week' is back and for the week of July 26th to Aug 1st 2009, the selection is "Doodlepalooza". This blog is not only a very new addition to the NL BlogRoll but is a fairly new addition to the blogosphere as well. This space from John Andrews began in November of 2008 and features a collection of doodles and prints from the talented artist with a sprinkle of commentary throughout. It's a great blog and another helpful reminder of how much artistic talent is in this province.

Neglected Newbies

It turns out that setting up a new email address for the blog roll to keep things organized kinda back fired. With new emails not coming to my main email address as a friendly reminder to myself, the addition of some new blogs have been neglected... until today. My apologies to those who have been waiting for a while to get this done.

Without any further delay, here are the newest additions:

Inkys Part of the Rock

On The Rock Live

Dear Aunt Nancis

Twisted Sister

Journeys in Eternity

Ferry Tales

AND we have one blog coming back to the roll after it went off the air for a brief period:

Welcome back!

To everyone else, please take the time to visit the newbies and say hello while you're there!

I Am Back

Yeah, I know I promised a new blog selection for this past Sunday, but I underestimated what I'd have to do when I got back to town after being on the road for a week. I do promise to have a new one next week though... and I won't break this promise.

Gros Morne is absolutely beautiful by the way. Spectacular. If you've never been and you enjoy the outdoors, I definitely suggest you taking a trip. I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

ALSO, why in the H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS, are we going to allow any power line to go through here. I could NOT beleive this news when I read it...

... more on that later.

I'll also add some new blogs to the roll this week... Stay tuned!

Vacation Time!

I just wanted to give any readers and roll members a heads up that I will not be near a PC on Sunday coming and thus will not be selecting a new Blog of the Week this week. The initiative will return on the following Sunday.

As for why, well it's because I'll be hitting the road early tomorrow heading to the west coast for a week of camping in beautiful Gros Morne National Park. I haven't been there since I was a wee lad and am really looking forward to seeing all that beauty once again. Maybe I'll share some pictures with you apon my arrival, should you be interested.

So, until next week, keep on rolling!

Blog of the Week : 07/05 - 07/11 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for July 5th to July 11th 2009 is "Elfshot: Sticks and Stones". Like last weeks selection, this blog is a fairly new addition to the roll and a very welcome one. It's the first of it's kind (with it's kind being archeologically inclinded) to be added to the listing. Until Tim Rast and Elfshot came around, there was no blog representation for the archeology community in the province. While this space of Tims is more used as exposure for his wonderful home made crafts, it also features a varity of posts on the overall subject of archeology and craft making in general. A must visit for fellow enthusiests!

Blog of the Week : 06/28 - 07/04 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for June 28th to July 4th 2009 is ''St. John's Real Estate Blog". This is a fairly new addition to our little community we have here but I don't believe it deserves any less attention, which is perhaps why it was selected this week. This blog from Stephen and Fraser Winters is a great place for those looking to jump into the market for a new home... or perhaps sell one. With a major focus on Real Estate as of late with regards to the world economic downturn and perhaps an influx of people coming to the province looking for a piece of that newly announced 10 billion in Oil money, this is just one of many sites that I'm sure folks will find interesting. So, why don't ya check it out?

Blog of the Week : 06/21 - 06/27 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for June 21st to June 27th 2009 is ''Townie Bastard"; a blog from a fellow Newfoundlander who is now living in Nunavut. TownieBastard references himself as one of the "Godfathers of Nunavut blogging" as he's been blogging from (and living in) the northern territory for over 3 years now. This blog features a delightful package of northern discussions from a Newfoundlanders point of view and Newfoundland discussions from his point of view up north. It's a great blog and it's been around for quite some time now. If you haven't taken the time to check it out, now's a great chance!

BOTW Returns Next Week

To those who have been following the Blog of the Week initiative for the past couple months, I apologize for not updating the list these last couple weeks. The initiative will continue again next Sunday. Stay tuned!

Sunday, May 31, 2009

Blog of the Week : 05/31 - 06/06 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for May 31st to June 6th 2009 is ''GregLocke.com". The 10th selection (that many weeks already?) in the series of weekly blogs of note is yet another space that's been around for quite some time. Greg is a 'professional photographer, journalist, media producer and IT junkie based in St. John's' and his blog reflects exactly that. It's a neat collection of articles on photography, media, technology and (as he says in his heading) 'other stuff'. What that other stuff is you'll have to find out for yourself and I suggest you. There are always interesting posts to browse so what are you waiting for?

Blog of the Week : 05/24 - 05/30 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for May 24th to the 30th 2009 is ''This Much is True"; another long standing member of the BlogRoll from Tina Chaulk out of Conception Bay South. Tina is not only a blogger, but a novelist as well with her first novel, which shares the title of her blog, was released in 2006 according to the 'about me' section on her site. The blog itself features a variety of articles about just about everything under the sun all written by a true writer.

Blog of the Week : 05/17 - 05/23 2009

The 'Blog of the Week' for May 17th to the 23rd 2009 is ''BondPapers". This blog from Edward Hollett is another long time member of the Roll. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's been around since the NL BlogRoll thing began. However long it's been around, it as a great little space that features wonderfully written social and political commentary (from a left point of view I believe) which is frequently updated. It's another must visit.

5 New Blogs and Some News

There was a bit of an influx in additions this week, which of course I love to see. In fact, with these 5 new additions we have reached 150 once again. 151 in fact. Yay! With this comes the news I refer to in the title. I've decided to limit the number of blogs that show in the roll to 150. Of course, this will only apply to those who choose to display the full list on their blog, instead of in a scrollable box or not at all. This will hopefully encourage our members to be pinging their blog whenever they post so that it shows up on top of the list. It will also help free up some space on those who are displaying the list when we reach the 200 mark again... which we will do; Right? Right!

While we wait for those 49 to roll in, be sure to check out the newbies:

Blog of the Week : 05/03 - 05/09 2009

The Blog of the Week for May 3rd to the 9th 2009 is 'John Gushue... Dot Dot Dot'. This blog of John's is a long time member of the roll and features a variety of different posts ranging from funny videos to inspiration quotes to general thoughts on life. This space is constantly updated with new sometimes witty, sometimes silly and sometimes informative posts. It's well worth a daily visit. Why not start today?

Plus Two

We have two more additions to the Roll today, one of which was a direct result from my recruitment post. I was honestly hoping for more responses to that, but one is always better than none right? Here's the first one from a Newfoundland and Labradorian now living away:

Log base 2

The other could have been a result from that post as well, but it was simply a link sent to me, so I'm not really sure. This one from someone in the Province.

Desktop Gourmet

Either way, no matter the route they took to get here, welcome aboard!

Blog of the Week : 04/26 - 05/02 2009

The Blog of the Week for April 26th to May 2nd 2009 is 'Our Place in Canada - The Newfoundland Experiment'. The very last thing you will read on this blog is:

The Pen is Mightier than the Sword, but the Keyboard Kicks Ass
Well said no? I giggled a lot at this actually. Perhaps too much.

Anyway, what this blog is about is pretty self evident from the title. It features articles about our great province from a 'BNB' perspective, anything from politics to a general way of life. Often funny and quite poinent, this one is a must see.

Please click the pic to do so.

Recruitment Post

Do you have a family member, friend, neighbor, or any acquaintence at all who has a blog that's not listed here?

Do you know a friend of a friend who loves bloggin'?

A friend of a friend of a friend?

Does your worst enemy conspire against you via the blogsphere?

If the answer to any of the above questions is yes (well, perhaps minus the final one), then please tell them about this place of ours. Get them to email me for inclusion. Suggest the link yourself, by replying to this post. Just get in touch with me with the link and I'll be sure to get them on board.

In all honesty, the description of the BlogRoll says that it features over 150 Blogs, but in actually there are less than that. There was a time where we had 250 plus, but many became inactive or non existent. This is why I'm calling out to you all now to help me bring this list back to it's former glory. I'm sure there are hundreds of blogs from people living in or from Newfoundland and Labrador who would love to be involved in our little community. If you know any, let em in on our little blog hub eh? I want more!

Blog of the Week : 04/19 - 04/25 2009

The Blog of the Week for April 19th to the 25th 2009 is 'Oh Me Nerves'; a blog with "ridiculous rants and boredom breakers" from Steve who is a Newfoundlander now living in New Brunswick. Steve is currently in the middle of posting his rants alphabetically with each new daily post beginning with a new letter... but backwards starting with Z. Great idea no? In addition to that great idea, one of my favorite things about this blog is the pictures in the top left corner which change depending on the page your on, and even then it could still be randomly generated, I'm not sure. Either way, the pics are great with some being hilarious.

Please click the pic about and take the time to check out this long time member of the roll. See what letter he's on today (should he not reach A by the time your reading this) and what pic you get.

The Blog of the Week for April 5th to the 11th 2009 is 'Product of Newfoundland'; a pop culture in Newfoundland and Labrador blog from Robert Hiscock. This incredibly informative blog has gone through a few design changes since it's been added to the role, but its always been something appealing to the eyes. With all the arts and entertainment information from 'The Rock' you'll ever need, this blog is one which should be visited frequently... if you're into that sort of thing.

Fresh Faces

As always, it sure feels good to post what I'm about to and I hope it's a start to another influx of blogs on our roll. I know they're out there. So, to start the ball a rolling, here's a few fresh faces:

Blog of the Week : 03/29 - 04/04 2009

The Blog of the Week for March 29th to April 4th 2009 is 'Painting On'; a blog from Margaret Ryall of St. John's. In her 'About me' section or her blog she says that she is "a visual artist whose mixed media work explores the effects of the passage of time on the natural world, objects, identity and memory" and her blog is an apparent reflection of that.

Introducing: Blog of The Week

The 'Blog of the Week' initiative started on March 29th, 2009 and each week following (on every Sunday whenever possible), one blog from the roll is be selected and designated as the 'Blog of the Week'.

With that prestigious title will come a few perks including (but perhaps not limited to):
  • One post about blog that will feature a snapshot of the site, a little information about the blog and of course a clickable link to get readers to the site.
  • This Blog of the Week posts will also be archived in a list on the right side of this Blog (up to a certain number of selections).
  • For the week that each blog is featured, the blog will also have a block dedicated to them featuring a link to the blog and a snippit of the last post on said blog.
As for the 'Rules' for this promotion, there are few:
  • Only blogs currently listed in the roll will be eligible. (Have an NL Blog? JOIN US!)
  • The blog selected must have had a post within the last 30 days of selection. (NOTE: This will not make you ineligible forever. You still may be selected in future weeks.)
  • Once your blog has been selected, it will not be eligible for selection again for 2 full years.
And that's it. Those are the only rules.

The whole purpose of doing this is to hopefully provide a little more attention to the blogs in the listing and help open up our community a little more. And please note, there may be other 'perks' to come with regards to this promotion. If you have any ideas or suggestions at all, please share them via comments on this post or by emailing me at nlblogroll@gmail.com.

I hope you like it!

Updates Not Showing on the Roll? Ping it!

PLEASE NOTE: The below information is not valid any longer. BlogRolling has shut down their service. Not all is lost however and this page will be updated soon with new information. Check back soon!

If you spend any time at all looking at the BlogRoll, I'm sure you've noticed blogs relocating to the very tip of the roll with an *Updated* tag next to it. This happens when you post a new entry to your blog. I've set it this way to keep fellow members of the roll informed of our community updates and provide a little more exposure to those who are actively updating their spaces.

So I ask; have you ever wondered why your blog listing is not bumping to the top of the list when you post a new entry? I'm sure some of you have as I am aware that some blog updates are being bumped... and I know the reason why; your blog needs a PING.

What I mean by that is you must communicate with BlogRolling to let them know your site has been updated, so the system can update your listing. A lot of blogs can do this automatically, however I find these auto ping services do not speak to BlogRolling... for whatever reason. Maybe this is a bug that's being worked on with BR2, I don't know... but there is a solution in the meantime.....

Use BlogRolling's direct PING service.

All you have to do is go there, enter your Blogs URL and within minutes your listing will be updated in the roll. This is the one sure fire way to ensure everyone knows your blog was updated.

Use it!

Upgrade Complete!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I've gone ahead and paid the annual fee (a minimal $21 bucks a year for such a great service!) to BlogRolling and within seconds the roll was upgraded.

What does this mean for us?

Well, mainly, we no longer have ads on top of the blogs that are opened via the NL Blogroll list, which was a new addition to BR2 if you haven't been following. There are a few other perks I believe that I have to check out, but for now, the removal of the ads is a great start... not that I really had a huge problem with the ads or anything. I even toyed with the idea of just keeping them there, but in the end, I just wanted our blogs to open without the ads bar on top. I'm sure you all agree with that decision.

Things are certainly coming along! Stay tuned for more in the coming days and weeks.

Back on Track

Well, it's been about a week or so since BR2 was launched and things now finally seem to back to normal. It took them a while to work through all the little bugs that popped up, but everything seems to be better than fine now. I'm able to get into the controls and edit the blogs (and by the way, I've cleaned the roll of any broken links or un-updated blogs already) and am also able to update any other controls we may need. It also appears that newly updated blogs are finally now being tracked (which was one of the bugs I mentioned). By that I mean, they are bumping to the top of the list with an 'Updated' tag next to them as requested. All in all, things are lookin' great! A big applause to the folks are BlogRolling. Thanks for working so hard and getting this back to us!

So, now that things are back on track, I can get to work on the goodies I have in store for us. Please stay tuned for further updates to the Newfoundland and Labrador BlogRoll.

BlogRolling is Back!

I think the title says it all!

I'm not sure if it's fully operation as of yet, but things seem to at least be back. I now have a lot of work to do to get things cleaned up, so... see ya!

Ads on BR2

The folks over at BlogRolling HQ have provided a little more information about the ads they will now be displaying on the blogrolls of non paying customers. Below is from their update site:
More about ads...

A few of you have asked for more information about the new advertising model that we will be launching on Monday to coincide with the release of Blogrolling 2.0.

The purpose of these ads is to attempt to create a semi-sustainable business model around Blogrolling to ensure that Tucows can continue to invest in the ongoing development and maintenance of Blogrolling.

Blogrolling.com serves well over a billion blogrolls per year to tens of thousands of customers, across hundreds of thousands of blogs. It requires some fairly serious bandwidth and hardware just to keep it running. We think it deserves more than just “keep it running” and with a sustainable business model around it, I believe we can fully realize the potential of this awesome service. Blogrolling.com was one of the original blog “widget” services, and even with the recent challenges, still probably one of the largest in terms of actual usage. We really want to make sure that it gets even better.

So, we’re going to try and sell some ads.

The go on to give screenshots and an explanation of how the system works, so do suggest you check it out to see what is to come...

... but having said that, I am opting to pay the $20 bucks to remove the ads from our system. With it only being that much for an entire year, it seems worth it to make the investment. Not only will it remove these ads, but it will also show the folks at BR that we appreciate their service. I have no problem paying for something I like, and I'm sure we can all agree that BR is something we all enjoy!

In the meantime, I am going to throw out there the idea of donating to the Newfoundland and Labrador BlogRoll. This could help me pay for the service or it perhaps could be a tip for the extra promotion I do for all our blogs here. Of course, this isn't necessary. I will continue to do everything I've been doing here and be adding more goodies over the next few weeks whether you decide to donate or not. But, if you do have a buck to spare, I would certainly accept it with smile and a thank you.

Donates are accepted via PayPal. If you can help, please do. If you cannot or do not wish to, I completly understand.

Now that that part is out of the way; 2 days to go!!!!

BR2 on March 2nd!!

Just when I thought that all hope was lost with BlogRolling, a little good news shines through. Finally, after checking the update site at least 3 (thousand) times a day, today (about 3 minutes ago) I learn that the BR2 system will be released very, very soon; March 2nd to be precise.

Wow, did you all hear that collective sigh of relief?...

I know, it is truly a huge lift of my bloggin' spirit and I'm sure you all feel it. It's been a long time since we've been without, but in a few short days we'll have our beloved system back... and with that I can finally get to work with all the other goodies I have in store.

Check out what they have to say:
The Skinny on BR2.0

In point form for maximum impact…

… BR2 will be released on March 2 (yayfinally!!)

…. all your old Blogrolls will be imported into the new system, you won’t need to change a thing.

… the system was recoded from scratch, from the ground up. This fixed a ton of old bugs (and probably introduced a ton of new ones)

… the “pay” option is back. All customers get all features, except Pay customers won’t see adverts in their links.

… “adverts in links” is our way of helping us pay for the cost of running blogrolling.com.

… it costs a lot to run blogrolling.com - last year alone we served over a billion blogrolls - that means a lot of bandwidth and a lot of gear. Without a way to recoup some of these costs, it is tough for us to properly invest in it.

… without proper investment, BR2 will fall into disrepair like BR1 did. I’d prefer to charge a little for BR2 so that we can build new features and improve the service, rather than just let it sit there.

Questions? I’m sure there are, please catch us @blogrolling on twitter.

I haven't decided if I'm going to pay (it depends on how much it costs) for the premium service but I can figure that out when I see what we have to work with but it is very good that there is no maintenance involved on both your end or mine. That'll let me get strait to work on the extra promotions and other special items of interest. Things are certainly looking up. Stay tuned for what's come!

11 days and counting...

Still Waiting

It's been a long time since I posted anything here and that is because there really hasn't been any updates with the BlogRoll system. They are still in development of their new software and we all patiently wait. Almost patiently anyway. I still have lots of ideas for this place but most of it hinges on them getting the system back up and running... which hopefully will be soon.

Their update site has this as the last update, posted on Jan 14th:
More More on BR2

Hardware was installed and tested the week of January 5th as promised, now we’re just waiting on delivery of the final code. We ran into some UI issues and made a decision earlier this week to simply go with the old UI rather than try to jazz things up and protract the outage.

Our developers are working on the migration tools now to get your old data into the new system. With some luck, I’ll have a concrete relaunch date Friday coming, or possibly Monday at the latest.

Keep your fingers crossed with me, I will post more as soon as I get word back from the team.

Well my fingers are crossed, and my toes... Are yours?
